How do you install a router to a computer?

I have an old desktop, and I am planning on getting a laptop soon. I want to get a wireless router, so I can have internet on my laptop, without an ethernet cord. (wi-fi doesn’t usually pick up anything in my house) I have never had a router before, so I have no idea how they work. How do I hook it up to my desktop, and will it even work with an old desktop?

Usually there’s a cord you plug into the computer… Not entirely sure how it works with desktop, but your internet provider should show you. Sometimes they give you an ethernet that plugs your router into your desktop, or they give you a wireless internet piece that receives the signal from the router.

If you get your own router, get one that’s wifi. Airport (apple) is one of the easiest to configure.

It connects to the cable or DSL modem via ethernet cable, then it broadcasts the signal to your computer(s) in your house…we get about a 30’ give or take range on ours, with a good signal.

The directions vary according to what router you purchase…and some will be a nightmare, no matter what (linksys is pretty hard, overall, though we’ve bought a few of theirs before).

If you go through best buy and can’t get it done, then I’d suggest hiring a “geek squad” or similar. Also, since it’s your first one, get one that the sales people tell you is easy to install, and explain what operating systems the various computers have that will be connecting to the router.
