You need to attack all three areas of the abdominal muscles: the upper abs, typically with crunches. The lower abs, typically done with leg lifts. And the obliques, which are the muscles on the sides of the abs, and that’s usually done with twisting crunches or twisting leg lifts, as it’s the side to side motion that exercises those.
