Why did he ignore me but dance with me when I asked him.

We were at a dance with a bunch of mutual friends. This guy I like, we do flirt, was there but seemed to ignore me all evening yet when I asked him to dance (I’d got fed up of waiting for him to ask) he did and afterwards caught hold of my hand and squeezed it. The last time I’d seen him was at his birthday where I gave him a present and he’d kissed me twice in thanks, once on the cheek & the second just on the side of my lips (by accident?). Did I do anything wrong. I’d known him quite a while before we started flirting and he gives out all the signs of liking me. During the evening I caught him looking at me across the room and I held his gaze for a while. He came to stand and sit by me and was always in my line of sight. I must add though he is a popular guy and everyone was spread around the room.
