I think I'm an atheist...

No,I’m POSITIVE I’m an atheist.I don’t believe in any “higher being” or “deity” or gods or anything like that.I’m not sure about how Earth or the sun or any of the other planets got here, and maybe,I don’t want to find out, but I sure as heII don’t believe that some old guy that sits on clouds all day just thought “hmm…why don’t I make some place and put living things on it?” and manages to create a sh*tload of something out of nothing(like my mom, sister and brother believe). It’s IMPOSSIBLE to make something out of nothing,no matter who or what you are!! The only thing that’s stopping me from telling someone is the reaction. If my mom found out, she’d either “rebuke me in the name of jesus” and make me study the bible anyway,or disown me. If a good friend of mine found out,he’d HATE MY GUTS,or start acting differently around me.I don’t know about the rest of my friends;maybe they’ll be more accepting, maybe they’ll be the same,if not worse. If anyone else found out, they’d avoid me more than normal!! I realize that the bit about my friends is odd,but it’s true! They’re all Christians and believe in god and jesus and all that crap, but I just don’t. I don’t want to be hated, judged or shoved off just because I think differently from (in my opinion) all of those brainwashed teenagers and adults.I still want to see them as me,and not just some nonbelieving freak, but I’m pretty sure that’s what’s going to happen. Is there ANY way to keep this from happening?

miscegenymiser if I said that people only believe in god because they’re ignorant and gullible, you would find that rude correct?

That is how I find your statement “atheism is becoming more of a trend and fashionable”

…I don’t think so… that’s just what ignorant people say to discredit others belief.

“I’m not sure about how Earth or the sun or any of the other planets got here”

Scientific instruments tell us that the sun is mostly hydrogen, and through space there are hydrogen gas clouds 100’s of light years across.

What we can tell from the evidence is that stars are born from relatively dense clouds of gas that contract under their own gravity, becoming incredibly dense toward the core till coalescing in a sphere shape. This generates an extreme amount of heat and pressure which causes nuclear fussion which is why a star shines.

The star formation leaves access gas that revolves around the star in a ring that condenses, and planets form out of the accretion of the matter. When the debris collect till large enough to have it’s gravitational force pull it into a sphere, you have a planet

However not all stars have sufficient planetary discs, for planet forming (absorbed, blown away by solar wind)

I’m not sure about how Earth or the sun or any of the other planets got here, and maybe,I don’t want to find out

If you aren’t sure, then you should retract the following statement:

It’s IMPOSSIBLE to make something out of nothing,no matter who or what you are!!

You suddenly sound less uncertain. By claiming such an event is impossible, you are (1) using the word impossible incorrectly, and (2) indirectly ruling out the possibility of the universe having a beginning.

I don’t want to be hated, judged or shoved off just because I think differently from (in my opinion) all of those brainwashed teenagers and adults.

…such hypocrisy…

I still want to see them as me,and not just some nonbelieving freak, but I’m pretty sure that’s what’s going to happen. Is there ANY way to keep this from happening?

…LIE…

So, your friends would no longer be your friends if they knew of your beliefs (you’ve got some lousy friends), so you can simply avoid the subject all together, and when it does come up, you can LIE to them (making YOU a lousy friend, too).

Hmmm… this all seems so pointless. Why not find some friends that aren’t so judgemental? Maybe then YOU’LL be less judgemental as a result.

Answer #3

A good way to avoid a situation like that is to not talk about it. If someone asks you how you feel about God then tell them (nicely). Just say you don’t beleive what happened because you will definately offend people because you slightly offeneded me about the whole “brainwashed children and adults” thing.

Answer #4

Anyone that ‘hates your guts’ for not believing the same things as they do isn’t a friend to you at all. Tell them, tell everybody what YOUR beliefs are, they seem so keen to push their ideas onto you, throw it right back at them. Your true friends will reveal themselves, the fakes will slip away. You’ll be better off for it.

Answer #5

At what point exactly did she say she hated religious people? Why would you ask why she’s here? She’s here for advice obviously, why don’t you try giving her some instead of trying to make her feel unwelcome?

Answer #6

“I don’t want to be hated, judged or shoved off just because I think differently from (in my opinion) all of those brainwashed teenagers and adults.”

You need to examine your own stance. You’re doing a moderate amount of judging yourself.

Not to denounce your position on the matter… but those of us on the other side of the issue have examined it as in depth as you… the entirety aren’t indoctrinated… and I would argue the opposite is becoming prevalent today… atheism is becoming more of a trend and fashionable and to project that all aspects of theism are being considered by each introspective atheist today would be an illusion.

Answer #7

I’ve been an atheist since I was 12 and have always had religious friends, coworkers, colleagues, etc. There are some people who can’t accept your atheism but I think you will be surprised how many people will still like you. Some have tried to “save” me but when they discover that I really thought through this and considered all of their arguments they let up.

Answer #8

* Is there ANY way to keep this from happening?

Sure. Just don’t tell anyone.

Answer #9

Ok, you hate religion and religous people. Why are you here then?
