I need help with baby mekko what should I do

Hi my name is Morgan I am 19, my dog went after a baby raccoon kit and broke it hind legs. I have taken it in and kept it save. I have also call wild animal rescue and am still waiting for a call back. I call my normal vet and they do not take raccoons. While I am looking for a vet, what should I do about the back legs on second thought hunter may have paralyzed him from the hips down because he does not seem in pain and has a big apatite (he is still nursing so I am feeding him kitten formula which he seems to love I am feeding him 4-5 times a day like I am suppose to ) but I don’t want to take any chances that he may feel pain so if he does I want to do something to help till I can find a vet or the rescue people call me back. Mekko is 3-4 week and has imprinted on me and is very sweet but is scared around anyone else. Also my mother is scared about the cost of the vet bill. Do you know of any program that will help pay for them. Please get back to me ASAP. Thank you Morgan

wow. you’re doing a fantastic job. kudos to you my friend. you are a truly compassionate person.

now…the kitten formula is correct, that’s what we used when we found a baby raccoon that lost its mom. If it continues to nurse from the bottle stick with it. here is the question…does it respond when you touch its hind feet. try gently moving its toes with your fingers and see if it responds.

If it does, then you know its not paralyzed. If it doesn’t then there is a good chance some damage has been done. if this is the case then I suggest finding a “Wild Animal Rehab Center” in your area. google search this…Tell them the situation and chances are they will be able to guide you from there.

Good luck with the kit. I’m sure you have now become its “mommy” and remember to make sure your new baby feels safe and loved. having raised a raccoon myself I feel I have to warn you…the little guys will get into EVERYTHING!!! so once this baby gets curious, start child proofing your room, cause they are very sharp witted and very very clever. message me if you need anymore help, okay? good luck.

Sounds like you’ve done everything right, and good job on the feeding etc. What were the reasons for animal rescue to not come pick it up immediately? Sounds a little like they’re not putting too much importance on the racoon’s well-being.

I think if the kit isn’t crying loudly when you pick it up then I suppose it’s not in too much pain. Then again some animals show that they’re in pain by being quiet, so we can’t be too sure about it. I wouldn’t recommend any human pain-killers as it could harm the animal. You may be right that it could be paralyzed – it’s possible that some nerves may have been severed by your dog.

It sounds like you’re doing the best you can at the moment, keep it up and maybe call the RSPCA? And give the animal rescue another call as a reminder to them.
