You’ll need sharp thinning shears for them to work properly. Don’t ‘thin’ the top layer of your hair or it will stick out. You should not use thinning scissors near the roots or ends of your hair, just the middle sections (mid-lengths). Section off the top layer, take a layer underneath and take a few ‘snips’ to that layer. Move onto the next layer and so-on. Don’t over-thin your hair or it will get very thin. It’s best to let somebody else work on your hair as opposed to doing it yourself.
