How to test Mental unstableness?

Say if a teen kill a few people on purpose, how would the courts and stuff decide if they are mental and so can’t be responsible for their actions?

And what would happen to the teen if they were found to be mental?

Answer #1

You mean insane…

A psychiatric evaluation is done to determine sanity and if they are found to be insane, they are placed in a hospital or home for that purpose.

Answer #2

It depends on what you mean by ‘on purpose’. If the person did not realize what they were doing was wrong because of some sort of mental disease or defect (psychosis, etc), the psychiatrist/psychologist will tell the courts that. They do not have to be legally insane at the time of evaluation, but at the time that the crime was commited. The psychologist has ways to determine whether a person is/was insane or is malingering
