Can someone who's been through a lot of trauma and is mentally unstable ever become sane again?

Can that even happen?… I wonder if someone who’s mentally unstable can ever get help to get them normal instead of putting them in a crazy hospital. I’m just curious.

Answer #1

I don’t think they could be sane on their own (without medication), because their emotions would creep up on them again and take them back under depression and they can do harm to themselves.

Answer #2

I think that’s tough to answer. Technically not everyone who goes through something traumatic will be ‘insane’ or need to go to a mental hospital. Even those who go to a mental hospital aren’t necessarily ‘crazy’, but rather do not know how to deal with flashbacks or thoughts they have due to their experience. Some may be suicidal, but again, I do not believe that this makes them ‘crazy’ or ‘insane’. It makes them human, and it means they need help dealing with whatever happened.

When it comes to recovery, there is no guarantee that people will recover from something like that to any high degree. If they can remember what happened to them, there is a high chance that they will be haunted by it no matter how much help they get. Some people do bounce back, however, and they do lead normal daily lives. It all depends on what happened to them, in my opinion, and how much help they need with things.

Psychology and psychiatry have successful treatments and do “cure” people’s mental disorders. I’ve read about patients with schizophrenia being cured through extensive psychological and medical treatments. It can be done. Usually if someone is “cured” they will have to go back for check ups and stay on they’re medication, but as long as they do these things they are fine. Going to a hospital for mental illness can be avoided if you go to a psychologist or psychiatrist before it becomes necassary to go to a hospital. If you recieve the right treatment early, you won’t have to go to a hospital and through controlling the disorder you can go back to living a normal life.

Answer #4

With the right care and positive people around to support them, it’s possible. Every ones different, I don’t think it’s possible to answer a straight yes or no to your question. It’s down to the individual and the help they seek and recieve. With the correct enviroment and patience it’s highly possible. Many people over come traumatic experiences, It doesnt mean they’ll necesserally forget them, but they can ‘leave them in the past’ as such, and rebuild their mental status.

Answer #5

It depends on the person. Some people are just mentally and emotionally formidable. They can go through the most traumatizing of ordeals, death, war etc and not only come out with their sanity intact, but be in total control. And then there are some who will have mental breakdowns because their parents wont let them go to a party or because their boyfriend didnt buy them the new ipad for her birthday.
