How to not feel useless at work?

Hi, I started my first job (I’m only in high school) and it’s just my third week but I feel completely USELESS! My job is to push around little dishes of appetizers around the restaurant and ask if the customers want any and if they do,(its like catering?) I stamp a price on their stamp card. I feel so useless because nobody seems to want my food! I walk back into the kitchen with my trays of food still full because nobody wanted any. I don’t know if I’m paranoid but I feel like everybody’s looking down on me :( It’s my third week and I kind of dread working because it’s all hot and greasy in the kitchen, plus I’m working with people way older than me. Does anybody have experience in this kind of stuff? Do you have some advice on how to “sell” food? (make it sound delicious without pushing it?) THANKS!

Alright look, you’re starting at the bottom. It’s kinda where you start at when you’re beginning. Realize that if you do your job well and with enthusiasm you’re going to move up. So, the number one way to sell stuff is by talking and being friendly with people. Your job is not to see if people want appetizers, but to sell those appetizers. So learn how to sell. Talk to people, discuss the food, try some of the appetizers so you’re able to personalize and say how great they are, and sell them. See if there’s seminars and what not on selling stuff. See if there’s classes you can take for free. See if there’s books you can read on this stuff. The idea is to go into this with an optimistic attitude. You’ve walked into a situation you’ve never faced before. And you’re still there and want to learn. This tells me several things. You’re willing to take risks (I.e you’re brave). You’re willing to learn (I.e. you’re open minded). And you’re willing to put you’re all in and persevere. All good qualities. So what if people are older than you? I’ve met idiots who were older than me, and really insightful smart people who were younger. Look, try and see sales as something where you’re going to try and sell to 100 people, but only 10 will buy. And in sales those are great odds. You’ll be fine. Just keep at it.
