How to get rid of the pacifier?

My girls are 4 and 3 , I know they should be off of them but they will absolutely drive me nutts if I put them away or hide them, especially at bed time. I have tried 3 times in the past 6 months , different techniques that I have heard of, but I always buckle, the longest was 8 days and then because they cry so badly for them I gave them back. how can I get them easily off the passy and are there any effects, short or long term of letting them keep them?

How many nights did they cry? Did you stick to your guns? I’m trying to get an idea of what it’s really like to take a binky from a 3yr old!

if it helps, have them throw the pacifier away. tell him they are big girls and the pacifier to nasty (we said shoo shoo or ewwy, lol) Another technique we did was cut the pacifier little by little until there was no nipple left. They cried for their pacifier, because that was the only way they knew how to calm down, so you might need to find other ways to help them control their emotions other than sticking the plug in. you know what I mean? If they as where the pacifier is at just tell them it’s ewwy and in the trash.

Answer #6

Keeping your children on the pacifier has been proven to cause gaps in their teeth among other things. When I felt my daughter was ready to get rid of the pacifier, I just threw it in the garbage, never to be seen again. Don’t give in, they will get over it soon. The problem with parents is that when they see their child crying, they feel sorry for them as if the child is suffering. Children know that when they cry, they’ll get what they want. Throw the pacifiers away and don’t buy anymore. =)

Here’s what I did. Made plans with the kids (3 of them with passies), that we would go to the toy store, drop the passies in the trash can and go in and pick something out. It worked like a charm! I have a picture of all 3 of them dropping their passies in the trash can. They were so proud of themselves and they got a toy as a bonus!!! Try it, it might work for you, too. I started talking about the plans for about a week before we did it, so that they got used to it. I brought all my kids (6 of them) and my husband to join in the “festivitires”. We all cheered and made it a true celebration.
