How do you analyze unseen prose and/or poetry?

Literature in my school ( I am sure in many other schools in my country, Singapore, too) tests this along with a book chosen a year beforehand. The hardest part of the exam in my opinion is the unseen poetry and prose questions. I think this is a very good question for students.

I am a secondary student.

Unseen prose is basically hidden meanings - you need to “read between the lines” so to speak… For example, this line from a poem I wrote several years ago: “To see how harsh winter’s wind still blows, A distance-travelled desert rose…” It is about a person from a desert country (like Egypt or India) heading to a colder country (like Canada) to be with the person he loves, regardless of the fact that the love might never work.
