How long does it take for your stomach to absorb calories?

I’m trying to help my friend with bulemia, she’ll eat and then like one, or two hours later throw up. I told her it doesn’t make any sense because the calories have been absorbed. But I’m not sure sure I’m right… How long does it take for your stomach to absorb calories? I’ve heard it’s 15 minutes and then it’s useless to purge

Answer #1

dont be embarrassed, but I hope you’ve stopped.

Hey Pigdog if you are smart enough to be aware of all the harm Bulimia can cause someone you should be aware that calling someone who has it unattractive or disgusting because of the act is really rather ignorant. Bulimia is an eating disorder like anorexia and is actually a mental disorder. Someone usually cannot stop on their own without help.

The stomach does not absorb any calories from food. It will absorb alcohol though. Sugar needs minimal digestion as well. Fructose (fruit sugar) doesn’t need to be digested and enters the blood almost as fast as alcohol. Everything else takes (starch, protein, fat) takes 1-1/2 hours to 3 hours to digest and be absorbed.

Bulimic girls need counseling. And, all that purging is messing up her upper GI. Stomach acid is meant to break down meat so, it works on the esophagus as well as a hamburger…actually, even better. And the acidic property will erode her tooth enamel.

I’m a guy and I’ve’e been augh coughpurgingcough

… it’s embarrassing actually I’m working on it with my best effort but its hard to stop. It’s like a craving and when I start eating I can’t stop until my stomach feels like it’s going to explode but today I have not purged and it’s 5:00 pm… so if I can make it all night then +1 for me. (not sure how I started this crap to be honest)

the funny thing is I’m not even fat -.- so I think it’s like my time of freedome when I dont have to follow a strict diet.

but like that guy said… I probably need counseling = (
