How healthy is a sandbox?

Okk, This probably is a dumb question for me to ask being I grew up a farm girl, but how healthy is it to have a sand box for my 4 yr old? I just got an old tractor tire from my neighbor and next spring I am planning to set it up and fill it with sand for my son. I plan to get a tarp to keep it covered when not in use, but I’m sure that isn’t going to stop everything else from getting into it at times(even cats) , but with sitting sand like that and getting rain in it and whatever else, can it cause my son to get sick?

I grew up on land, not city and practically ate dirt.

This is why you have an immune system.

If you constantly give antibiotics this and tablets that your immune system won’t actually have to do anything and will get weaker. I barely ever get sick (Once every 2 years about average) and I don’t take strepsils or antibiotics etc.

I would think it’s ok.

My sand pit was never covered up. Dunno if thats a bad thing though.

I wouldnt think so… if your worried about things like rain you could put it under cover those things shouldnt interfere with the sand as long as the cats dont use it as a toilet it should be fine just make sure your son doesnt eat the sand! you need to teach him that its something fun to play with, not food! make sure youve got lots of nw toys for him to play with as well, colourful things will keep him entertained

I was thinking of things like parasites and bacteria that may be in the sand…just things like that…I as a kid always just played in the mud and kids never seemed to of gotten sick(that you heard of anyways) but it seems like now days you hear of so many different things that causes illnesses..I’m just curious! (And being a mom myself, LOL I guess I never had to think of it before..(my older two are 15 and 14 and they never had a sand box as a kid) …
