How do you untrain a kennel-trained dog?

My dad and stepmom kennel-trained their chocolate lab, and he’s about 5 years old. Now they want to get rid of the kennel and let him roam around the house. What steps should they take and what should they do in order to accomplish this?

Answer #1

Put a bed in it’s place, and put the bedding he had in the kennel on that bed. He’ll get used to it…however, patience will be needed as he’ll feel insecure for a while…pacing, whining, etc…

Answer #2

Just leave the kennel door open and let him come and go as he pleases. He will eventually ‘get it’. Don’t just take the kennel away. Many dogs like the comfort and security of a kennel and he might select to continue to sleep there.

Answer #3

*‘feel insecure for a while…pacing, whining, etc…’

If you proceed slowly…do not just remove the kennel but leave the door open. Let him learn that he can come and go at will… then once used to that take the bedding out and place it next to the kennel, then once used, remove the kennel…you will avoid placing much of the stress on the dog.. why do something that will make your animal feel insecure. Just go slowly…you will be pleased and surprised how quickly the process goes.
