Of course he’s not “untrainable”…just seems that way…

The housetraining is a matter of NEVER TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE DOG…It’s easier when they are babies, but the same holds true for an older puppy…Take him out everytime he eats or wakes up…immediately (keep shoes by the door, so you can slip right into them)…don’t let him run around while you’re putting on your shoes, keep him at your side (leash)…Don’t come in till he’s gone potty (keep saying “go pee”…”go pee pee”…PRAISE BIG when he goes. He will learn to pee command (that’s the nice part of saying “go pee”, then praising big)…He also needs to get out every 20 to 30 minutes if he’s playing…The reason?? You’re trying to beat him to the punch…getting him out BEFORE he goes.

Also…a crate…for times when you can’t watch him…he can have a chew toy in there with him (no rawhide tho, when he’s alone)…He will learn to love his crate, like a kid with a bedroom of his own.

Also, to control chewing…pick up and put out of reach, anything you want to keep…if he’s going after furniture, there is Bitter Apple (can get at Petco)…the one thing you have to do tho, is spray a little in his mouth first, so he gets a good taste of it…that’s the only way bitter apple works. It’s harmless to them and to your furniture.

Also, take a cardboard box full of toys and chews of all shapes and textures…if you see him pick something he shouldn’t have, “trade” him with something from the box…(I use the word “trade”…like a command)…It works because dogs always think what YOU have has to be better…LOL. He will figure out that what is in the box, is HIS…

Dogs are time intensive when they are young…committing to housetraining is the MOST intensive of everything.

I’d also look into an Obedience puppy class…it’s great for the dogs to learn to socialize…and the humans learn so much about their new partners…

Breed also plays a part in their need to please…some are more determined (stubborn), than others…but , innately…they all want to please the leader…it just doesn’t seem that way sometimes…

Answer #2

Be consistant with the way you do it.

Take on the Dog Whisperers approach, it really does work. In my opinion, you need to do what he does because you need to show the dog, in a natural way that that behaviour is not what you want.

Most of all, stay consistant, otherwise you will confuse the dog.

Lots of luck…

Answer #3

be consitant like Phrannie says and no you dont need to hire someone…you can do it yourself..have treats and everytime he goes praise the heck outta him and reward him…he will catch on…

Answer #4

at 8 months the only thing you can do is to hire a dog trainer
