Before computers, the method we used was to make a tape recording at a slow speed and then play it back at a higher speed. I tried it with a two-speed reel-to-reel machine I had–I recorded someone speaking very slowly at 4.75cm/sec, and then played the tape back at 9.5cm/sec. You had to be careful to speak in a normal voice as the tendency, when speaking slowly, is to lower the voice.

I remember The Chipmunks back in the late 1950’s.

During the war, the Germans invented a Tonnschreiber that recorded high-speed Morse Code signals and the signals could then be played back at a lower speed without affecting the pitch at all. A similar method was used to create the Chipmunk effect (in reverse, of course).

It’s all in the pitch, a really high pitch. Girls could do it since they can hit the high notes. Or being nazel, speeking through your nose.
