How do I fix my mouse pad?

I bought a laptop yesterday, haha boxing sale! Anyways the scrolly thingy on the mouse pad, (the vertical thing that allows you to move up and down a page but sliding your finger) suddenly stopped working, how do I get this to work? I went to control panel, and then mouse, and im not sure if this has anythign to do with it,but I kept getting this message (unable to connect to the synaptics pointing device driver) what does this mean? how can I fix themouse? I am completely computer illiterate btw. :P

run windows update and see if it finds the driver…

better off to just buy a seperate computer mouse and attach that to the computer.
