How do blood types work?

What makes a person type A, B, or O blood type? And why are there negatives and positives?

I know there’s also type AB. I know you can get it from parents with a type A and a type B, but is that the only way you can have type AB? And does it happen that way every time?

I just had a sudden curiosity and wonder if anybody wants to feed me their knowledge on the subject.

The offspring of parents will have a combination of their blood types. To determine what the possible blood types would be, you can use a small punnet square. There is a phenotype (physical make-up) of the blood which is the characteristics you can see. And then there is the genotype (genetic make-up). The possibilities for blood type A are AA or AO, B is BB or BO ,AB is only AB, and blood type O is OO. So to answer your question about AB, yes the parent must have types A and B, but the genetic makeup could be AO or BO.

The positives and negatives of blood types are determined by the Rh system. In this Rh proteins are either positive or negative. The options would be something like this:
++ Rh positive +- Rh positive – Rh Negative And this is what determines what follows your blood type.
