How can I tell if my parakeets are boys or girls?
Babies have a smooth and pink cere (nostril area). As they get older the color changes. Females will usually have a pinkish-brown cere. As the bird ages it is normal for the cere to become flaky in appearance. This is true for all varieties. Males have a light blue, dark blue or purplish-blue cere. This is true in normal varieties (green body with yellow head) only. In pieds, look for a light pink to purplish cere.
