Not everyone has the courage to face the publishing industry even if their literature is highly recommended for public consumption. Because you already have your materials, the next thing you might decide on doing is to find a publisher who will be your retailer, publisher, editor and distributor at the same time - which is of course not that easy to find.

What you first need to do is decide whether you want to have your novel published by a traditional publisher or a self publisher.

A traditional publisher rejects most of the manuscripts received, and if they accept the manuscript they claim all rights to it. A self publisher will only reject the manuscript if it’s actually bad, since you pay a fee (usually from $600 +), and you keep all the rights to your own book.

Once you figure that out, write your story using these points (my own publisher gave me this formatting):

-We need your manuscript as a single word processing document created with Microsoft Word software. -Your book needs to be at least 48 pages or 10,000 words. -We prefer:

An 8.5” x 11” layout with 1” margins all around Single spacing Just one space after all marks of punctuation (even after a period) Paragraphs indented with a single 0.5” tab (not the space bar) Times New Roman typeface Twelve-point type, and no headers, footers, or page numbering

-Chapter Formatting

If you want your chapters to begin at the top of the next page, please insert a “hard page break” (CONTROL+ENTER) at the end of each chapter to take the cursor to the top of the following page.

Keep in mind that hitting the ENTER key several times to move the cursor to the next page will cause spacing problems when your 8.5” x 11” manuscript is repaginated for the 6” x 9” book size.

The best advice I was ever given on “how to become an author” was just to WRITE. Write EVERY second you can, about everything. Write poems or stories, and mostly, accept that your writings are not going to be perfect at first; or EVER for that matter. I write full-length books, and trust me, the first is always the worst.
