How do I house train a 3 year old Siberian Husky?

I recently adopted an abused/neglected husky from the local shelter. For the most part he seems trained. By this I mean, when I am home he will go to the door and bark and whine for me to take him out and he will go do his business outside, but I work long hours at work, and everyday I come home, there is feces and urine… Almost always in the same spot. I’ve tried laying pads down on that area, but he rips them to shreds (I think he has separation anxiety) so what should I do?

Answer #1

its going to take alot of work, because it hard to break them of habits if they are that age. but i would suggest maybe asking a friend or family member to come every few hours to take him out, since you work long hours, you could leave the tv on or the radio for noise to keep him calm if he does have separation anxiety.

also male dogs are much harder to fully train because they mark territories in the house. we put newspaper in the laundry room that had tiles so it was easier to clean up, it was right by the back door. it helped alot when we weren’t home. but if you do have someone come in and take him out it should be less of a problem.

Answer #3

A pet cage can help because they don’t like to “go” in the same area where they eat and sleep. Then if a friend could possiibly help you out by stopping in 2-3 times a day while your at work to let him out and strongly correct him if he has an accident, he should get the picture pretty soon.

Answer #4

you DIDNT think things through AT ALL…Huskies are high energy dogs. Negelcted dogs need even more time than an average dog….Seriously bad move since u work long hours…yeah ur intentions are good but comeon ur better off with a cat or better yet a gold fish/

It is YOUR dog….dont let ur friends do the work U R suposed to do.

I think u better taking him back to the shelter and say sorry I dont have as much time as i thought i had to help this dog recover.

what you are doing is harming the dog and is unfair to the dog

Answer #5

I think you are an idiot. You know nothing about the situation my dog is in. You need to be put in a cage. I’m not harming him, he’s a perfect dog other than the not going to the bathroom in front of me. you’re a real idiot. I think I have plenty of time and the dog and I have bonded, and I actually figured out what works for him. And I think from being shot and abused, he’s pretty content where he is. Not my first rescue. Won’t be my last. Get out of here. I didn’t ask about a huskies energy. I’ve had them before. He actually is very mellow though. And we run twice a day. And he’s perfectly fine and I’m offended by you. So f* off idiot.

Answer #6

lol…thats ok i dont care if ur offended by me… I responed to ur question…dont like people being blunt and direct…then dont ask questions here.

If its totaly fine for you to disagree with what i said…but come now only valguar men using bad words and insluts need to be put in a cage :)

Answer #7

I agree with Kurtz….you didn’t think this thru for a single minute. You’re going to have to either figure out a way to keep him outside when you’re gone….or you’re going to have to live with feces and urine when you come home. With any luck he might housetrain (VERY SLOWLY, of course) on weekends. You might also get a crate, but start him out slowly on the weekends, feeding him inside it, putting him in with the door open….moving on to closing the door for 5 minutes…then 10, then 15, etc.

You picked yourself an extremely high energy dog, to be left alone for LONG hours every single day…a shelter dog, t’boot….they come to you insecure…and you don’t have the time to work with him.

Answer #8

Already potty trained. Thanks :) 2 days. You don’t know what I thought. Once again. I have had multiple huskies. Deuces haha idiot

Answer #9

Then he was already housetrained….he must have just needed a refresher course.

  1. Never hit or yell at the dog for going to the bathroom on the floor.
  2. If he goes to the bathroom on the floor take him to wear he did it, show him and bring him outside. Orif you see him doing it.
  3. Kennel him at night or when you are gone.
  4. Make him stay in the room you are in. ( Baby gates) So you can keep an eye on him.
  5. Lots of treats when he goes potty outside
