Why did he break up with me?

okay so here the thing, me and my boyfriend were going out for a while and his friends constantly asked me to get with him. but the thing is he always had basketball and he never had time to hang like that anyway. for thursday night me and him were talking on the phone, like we do almost every night. we talked about plans that we had to hang like all weekend, christmas and my birthday, I really thought things were going to turn out good. but one of the best parts is one of my best friends was dating one of his close friends, I thought it was pretty much perfect. so it surprised me when my best friend I/med me saying her boyfriend dumped her. I told mine about it and not soon after he asked me if we could “just be friends”. when I asked him why he said “he just doesn’t want to girlfriend right now”. then that night I told our friend I still liked him and I would probably get with him still, and then he was like “I don’t know I still kinda like her.. I don’t know”. do you think thats the actual reason he broke up with me? any insight?
