how can i tell if a gold and diamond ring is real without going to the jewelers?

i mean its stamped 14 k..and it looks real,, but it looks soooo expensive, and i dont wanna a jeweler buying it off me if it is real for a lot less than it s worth

Answer #1

Googled it :)

One easy quick & easy way to find out is the streak test. Rub the mineral in question across an unglazed porcelain tile. If the streak it makes is black then it is pyrite (fool’s gold). If it is golden yellow then you have gold. You can find these tiles in your local home & garden shop or hardware store.

Another simple one is the hardness test. Gold has a hardness of 2.5 to 3 on Moh’s Scale. Pyrite is 6 to 6.5. Glass has a hardness of about 5.5. According to Moh’s scale you should be able to scratch glass w/ pyrite but not w/ gold. Pennies can also be used as their hardness is about 3.5.

Gold is found in several different forms or habits. It can be dendritic (vein-like) or massive as in nuggets. Upon examining pyrite more closely (perhaps w/ a 10x magnifier) you will see that while it resembles a gold nugget it is actually made up of many tiny little cubes.

Gold will not cleave whereas pyrite will. Cleavage is simply how a mineral breaks evenly due to weaknesses in its crystal structure. Pyrite has cubic cleavage so that when it is hammered it will come apart in perfect little cubes.

Hope this helped! :)

well my dad is an ex jeweler…actually an ex diamond dealer…so this is advice is straight from what he used to tell me… Now a days, you really cant tell unless you know how to use a loop, that small thing jewelers use to chk the stones with. Today they have found a way to make even fake diamonds look real…and I am not talking about cubic zirconia either! Cubic Zirconia is synthetic, made of crystal which is makes it shine like a real diamond & very hard to distinguish btw a real or a fake diamond. The only real way to test beyond a shadow of a doubt would be to take a piece of glass and try to go diagonally see what happens using the diamond on the ring. If it cuts it then its a real diamond. If it doesnt…then its not! Besides…when purchasing a diamond of any kind, make sure you hv some document of it being authentic. Do your hw go to someone you an trust…someone that has been in the business through mutual friends or relatives & most of all make sure there is a guarantee if something should happen!

good luck on finding out…hope this info was helpful.

Answer #5

Oooooh I forgot about that diamond bit. Good answer! :)

Answer #6

Awe, thank you that was so sweet of you to say….

learned a lot about diamonds from him…actually wanted to go to school for it to become one too but I would hv no connections today…and getting my feet wet would be a b!tch bcz if you dont hv connections in the business then you will nev make it. Every deal is based on word of mouth…and if they dont know you then it would take a lot of convincing for someone to trust you enough to do business with you. So…I decided to take law instead…what a huge mistake! :(

Answer #9

no problem :)

Answer #10

The way you can tell is to get a compact mirror, any cheap one from the dollar store or so, and scratch the diamond against the mirror and if it leaves a nice scratch, its real diamond.

Answer #11

Fool proof diamond test:

Find a piece of glass, get the “diamond” and scratch the glass (preferably a car window or something strong)

If the glass scratches, it’s real
