How should you give two weeks notice?

I’m giving two weeks notice at my job. Should I do it in writing? Or in person? I’m really not sure. Any advice would be appreciated.

One time, when I left a job, I waited till payday & didn’t give notice. The company had fired a few people on the spot in the past when they had given notice, so I didn’t feel like I owed them anything.

Another time, I worked for a company that I was very sad to leave, but I got an offer I couldn’t pass up from a much larger, well known company. I gave my boss a call (since I worked remotely) and told him the story. He was regretful too, but understood.

It depends on what kind of relationship you have with the people you work for..and what kind of people they are, how you should treat them as you walk out. If you’ve got a good relationship with them, and their referral matters to you, then you should sit down & have a face to face.

However, if they aren’t very good people, there aren’t any laws requiring notice..so, I’d leave the last day that you plan, and tell them on the way out to bring your last check. Good luck with the new job.

Give notice in writing; best in a block format business letter. Don’t say anything nasty no mater how you feel about your job. Thank them for the job they provided you but say that you wish to persue opportunities elsewhere.

Like Steve said, there is no legal requirement to give 2 weeks notice. It is a courtesy.

If you company fired you do you think they would give you 2 weeks notice? Not a chance.

The only thing I’d caution is that it is usually in your best interest to leave a job on good terms. Potential employers may contact your previous employers. If you left without notice they might badmouth you.
