How to stop swallowing a lot when I get nervous?

I swallow a lot because I get nervus. ..anyone know how to stop it and why it happens?

Well, because your nervous. I think almost everybody gets like that. When I’m nervous, my ears get red and I jitter a lot when I talk. Just before you do anything. Take a deep breath -slowly-

Well I being though the same thing but differently usually for a big project or something and the way I stop it is thinking about something else and it gets my mind out of ma nervous stage and I also walk front and bck and I usually look at ma self in da mirror and I talk and I feel comfort and first u need to value urself and feel confident and lata u would have no fear like try to get more out der and help from others and trust me u will learn. Try breathing long deep breaths and concentrate on your breathing keep your mouth closed it should help :]

I do this too and only when I am nervous. The problem is that I am only nervous when I lie (which is something I used to be very good at). I notice that talking will help get rid of it. So just make any noise and the impuse will go away.

That’s very useful info mandata. I have been having the same issue for about a year now, and it’s been getting worse. I never used to do the swallowing thing when around people, but since a year I have been doing it. Now it’s so bad that I am sometimes swallowing even when I am by myself when I subconsciously think about being around people.

I know I can beat it, but I wanted to understand the full scope of the problem before fighting it. I have been popular since like 1st till high school (very popular), and from then on it’s been downhill. I guess I am thinking too much and trying to live up to my old glory…or something like that. Whatever it is, I have to fight it.

Dear buzzehbee,

If you watch nervous people you will see they all do something…swallow, pace, rub their hands etc. It’s natural to do something…so the key is to do something not too noticeable. Keep something small in your pocket and when you become nervous take it out of your pocket and hold it. At interviews I usually keep a paper clip in my hands. I even dropped it once and had to excuse myself to get it off the floor. Everyone laughed knowing why I had the paper clip in the first place…it’s natural to be nervous so find something to else to do than swallowing.

I get this all the time but it occurs when im around people. I thought I was the only one that went through this but im not. um I use to never think about these things but now since high school I’ve been thinking about this to much. I have decided that im not going to do this any more its been going on for 2 years im going to try and get rid of it when im in summer school. I think that in order to be me again I have to get rid of my anxxiety and deal with life. your only going to be on earth for a little time so I mind as well have fun . ever since this has been happening I use to have 90s in all my classes now im in all my classes with 60 and 69’s I hate this. I just dont understand why?// I think im thinking to much… I think god can only do so much I think that people like me really dont have any thing wrong we just are thinking way to much
