Is it possible to be a feminist in your religion?

Is it possible to be a feminist in your religion?

Please stay civilised on this thread! Thanks.

Since I have no religion I can be anything I want and indeed I’m proud to call myself a feminist.

One thing I would like to toss out is The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) have long recognised the equality of women and all races. In fact they took this position long before it was popular. Quakers were in both the slavery abolition and women’s sufferage movements early on. In England some were even imprisoned for heresy for preaching that women are equal to men.

I’ve long admired the RSOF for their position on this and other topics.

Floss, You have touched the core of a fundamental issue. Dogmatic christians, I imagine, would say ‘no’ on the bases that the bible promotes unambiguously gender discrimination. People who have a coherent knowledge of the bible know this. And accordingly, most denominations practice it. Nothing to be proud of, so far. So if you believe that the bible is perfect and should be followed the way it presents itself, as the true word of an infallible god, the answer must be: NO! This view has implications. The bible also promotes a range of other nasty notions (again, people with an overall and balanced knowledge of the bible are obviously familiar with this, so please people, don’t ask for quotes. Study it yourselves! It is not hard to find). Slavery, torture, murder, deception, child beatings, ethnic cleansing, abduction of women and a few more of that nature, are activities that should be practiced when required, by every responsible christian. No, sorry, I rephrase that: by every responsible MALE christian. Not my recommendations, but God’s. That is if you believe that the bible is God’s word. As it seems, most dogmatic christians are, however, rather selective in their practice (and promotion) of God’s Word and do not all of those horrible things. Most countries have laws against those horrible things to prevent christians from doing them. So, I could say: join the club, be selective, make up your own kind of christianity and be a christian feminist regardless of what God’s Word says and find a few random verses that will back you up. Easy peasy! Alternatively, be a fundamentalist and practice your religion in strict accordance with God’s Word. In that case, you can’t be a feminist of course. Or, doubt that God’s Word is not truly God’s word and use your mind and wisdom (I know that you have plenty of that) to conclude that you do the right and responsible thing by being a christian feminist! Now, if you do that, you might get into trouble with those grumpy dogmatics who will claim that you are eroding your credit for heaven. But as a christian, you can pray for them, and ask God if She will forgive them…
