Can someone explain the expression "Emo" to me?

I think I get it. Pretty sure it has to do with being emotional, but I think at one time or another we all are. But why are some kids called “Emo kids” in school?

Answer #1

Emo is defined as 1.over-excitable: given to excessive displays of emotion 2.emotional punk rock: a genre of punk rock music that began in the mid-1980s in Washington, D.C. and is noted for its thoughtful and emotional lyrics

Answer #2

Thanks. Would you happen to know any lyrics considered to be emotional punk rock, so I can better understand?

Answer #3

Generally speaking, now ‘emo’ is more of a style than a music genre like goth or mosher. It was more popular roughly 2006-2009

I would say it is more frequently used by people who aren’t ‘emo’ when they feel the desire to label people who prefer darker clothing and rock/borderline indie rock music. As such, due to a combination of this and poor journalism ‘emo kids’ also have a reputation for being depressed or even of being a cult o.O

Answer #4

I’m Emo..

Answer #5

Emo - Emotionally unstable.

Answer #6

OK. So what is it about you that makes you label yourself like that? I’m just trying to understand, so please don’t woorry about getting criticized. I won’t do that.

Answer #7

In my school emo means a punk/goth person who wears lots of black and cuts/ self harms and is suicidal a lot and keeps to themselves. a “scene” person is the same by doesn’t cut or self harm. That’s the street definition ;p

Answer #8

Answer #9

Answer #10
