Can someone explain to me controlled stimulus, neutral stimulus, neutral response, and controlled response for my psychology homework?

Answer #1

You’ve come to the right place… I am assuming you are referring to pavlovian / classical conditioning? If so, your phrasing seems a little bit off. Are you referring to pavlovian conditioning, ot are you simply referring to scientific method? Your question could be interpreted either way and would lead to completely different answers.

Answer #2

For my homework, Im supposed to find a video displaying one of the 3 types of learning styles and then label the controlled stimulus, neutral stimulus, neutral response, and controlled response of that video. but I dont understand what they all mean

Answer #3

I am assuming that they are trying to teach you about pavlovian conditioning, which is a form of learning which often occurs below conscious awareness. Is it possible that by ‘controlled’ they meant ‘conditioned’, and by ‘neutral’ they meant ‘unconditioned’?

Answer #4

I’m assuming you have found your answer, but for future reference:

An unconditioned stimulus is something which may be relevant to an organism, such as food. So an unconditioned response, is the way in which an organism responds to that food naturally; for example, by salivating. A conditioned stimulus is a neutral stimulus (e.g., a bell-ring) which is irrelevant - at least in this given context, which involves food - to the organism. If you pair the conditioned stimulus with the unconditioned stimulus frequently or powerfully, eventually that conditioned stimulus will elicit the same response from the organism as the unconditioned stimulus would, and so this is now called a conditioned response. An example would be:

You place a bowl of food in front of a dog. The dog will begin to salivate because it recognises the food. The food here is the unconditioned stimulus, and the salivation is the unconditioned response, as both things are natural. Now let’s say that you ring a bell 15 seconds before you present the bowl of food to the dog, and you do this several times. The bell is a conditioned stimulus. Eventually the dog will learn that the onset of the bell-ringing means that food is coming and so the dog will begin to salivate at the sound of the bell. The salivation response towards the bell is the ‘conditioned response’. If you then ring the bell and do not offer the dog any food, you will notice that the dog will still salivate over the next few trials. This shows that the dog has been conditioned, but eventually the salivation response will weaken or cease if you continue to present the bell-ring to the dog without offering it food. This is called ‘extinction’.
