How is a dress that reaches my knees considered "short"?

It’s not short. :) But to please your family, maybe try wearing leggings/tights underneath it? I usually wear MUCH shorter skirts and dresses, but with tights, since they keep my legs warm and avoid the embarassment of flashing my panties if I accidentally bend over too far.

Every person/family has their own ideas and beliefs about wha clothing is modest and what isn’t. Generally a skirt that goes down to your knees wouldnt be considered short, its an average length for a skirt. Like i said though, different people have different views - back in the day it was considered sl*tty to wear a skirt that showed the knees or even the ankles, perhaps your mother is stuck in the old days. Just wear the skirt the length your mother wants you too and when you leave the house roll the waistband up until it reaches your knees and the length you want it.

Also, since “sweater dresses” are currently in style, most stores are selling plenty of leggings that are quite modest while still showing off the silhouette of your legs and without being bulky, constricting, or hot. I love these for use during the wintertime. :)

I would not see it as short, for my anathing above the knee is too short, but when it hits the knee it’s perfect.
