Dorm life

Okay, so I live about 108 miles from the school and thats too and from the school, so I’m wanting to move into a dorm. I also have classes that start very early in the morning, anyways, my dad is really upset that I have even considered moving out of his house and into a dorm on my own. Should I stay with my parents and just be unhappy where I can’t enjoy the school and everything they have to offer, or should I keep talking to my dad and telling him how much I want to be in the dorms? By the way, I am 21 years of age and no I can’t just get up and leave because I don’t want my parents to hate me!

He might be more receptive if you approach from the aspect of having the opportunity to experience the ‘total college-life experience because you’re ‘only going to pass this way once’…I wish you the very best !!

Or he might be more receptive if you approach it from the aspect of insane gas prices…I mean, it’s supposed to go up to like $15 a gallon. Wouldn’t it be so much cheaper to NOT drive 108 miles every day to go to class that’s costing like $10 grand? I student taught at a school that was about 96 miles to and from campus…it was such a pain. I mean, I loved the kids and the school and the teachers…but it would have been so much nicer if they picked up the school and put it about two miles from campus.

Not to mention the fact that it will interfere in your study time too. Not only will you be spending all day at class, but you’ll loose all that time you’ll be driving to and from school every day. You can’t study while you’re driving! I had to be at the school at 8:40, which meant leaving the dorm at 7:30…then I had a night class at 5 which meant leaving the school at 3:45 to just BARELY make it class on time. I lost two plus hours of my day driving to and from the school…I lost so much work time and was so much more stress than I would have normally been. It will be so much more efficient for your car and your studies if you stayed on campus to have more time to study and do your work.

As far as dorm life, I’m 21 and a 2nd semester senior in college…and I’m still in a dorm. I think it’s great. If you get real close to your hall mates and room mates…it could be a real fun time. Some dorms are different…but where I live they have contests and parties and other activities to keep you busy. Not only is it a great social network, but it’s great for support too. I know I can go to any one of the people down the hall if I have a crisis…
