Why can't I housebreak my dog?

Why can’t I get my dog properly potty trained? He won’t poop outside. I have tried everything I can think of including keeping him in a kennel with his food for a week and only taking him out for potty time. I have even sprayed the house with that stuff that is supposed to make dogs not want to pee and poop in the house.

6 weeks? They aren’t old enough to begin learning at that age.

Answer #2

PS! Prime learning time is 6 - 12 WEEKS!!! It will be much harder to teach after that time so make sure you are EXTRA patient then! And never listen to ANYONE that tells you to HURT or SCARE your pet. You want your pet to respect you not fear you.

Answer #3

What is the dogs punishment when he does go on the floor? Maybe if he gets punished he’ll learn.. And watch the actions of the dog.. They usually smell, sniff, and look around before they go potty, at that moment, pick the dog up and take it outside.. soon enough.. hopefully, he will learn, and then give a treat if he does go outside!!

Answer #4

try bribing him with treats outside and refuse to gie it to him until he goes

Answer #5

I have learned the hard way myself.but the only thing that I was toled that worked was to take them out every two hours if they need it or not.and yes it is a pain but did work very well.and when they did something I would reward them with a treat and praise them after.hope this is helpfull.

You can try all the books and internet info you want. Trust me…I have. I’ve got a Cairn Terrier that is crate trained, and knows the words, “No”, “Outside”, “Go to your house (the crate”), and other simple commands. He’s quite smart. In spite of my 9 months of patience, scheduled feedings and outside potty breaks, he still has NO CLUE how to tell me he needs to go.

Just the other night he peed right in front of me on a blanket I had just washed. This was less than an hour after his last potty break outside. Don’t ask how I responded. He spent the next 2 hours outside. All the housetraining books, videos, and Cesar Millan are almost as full of Cairn crap as my living room. I’ve followed their advice to the letter, and this dog still dumps and pees where ever and when ever he wants.

My next step is to get the duct tape…

DO NOT SCOLD YOUR DOG FOR GOING INSIDE. They will either learn to EAT their poop so you dont see it, or just go where you arent looking! If you catch the dog in the act immediately pick the dog up and bring them outside. Do NOT come back in until they go. Once they do show lots of praise and a super yummy treat. Also, clean it up AFTER you bring the dog back in. Make sure they are locked in their crate or pen while you do so! There are many books at any local library on house training. I’d suggest to anyone that they pick one up BEFORE they get a dog but they can certainly help after you have one as well! BTW a puppy is just a baby and you wouldnt scold or yell at your baby just because they had an accident while they were learning to go in the right place, would you?
