dog pee

how can I get my dog to stop peeing in the house we ahve a doggy door but he keeps peeing in the house

Answer #1

You need to potty train him, whenever he does something wrong you need to be strong and scold him. I used to have a dog, and it was so hard to yell at him because he gave me the saddest look. But eventually, he got the point and learned to do his business outside. It’s not easy, and some dogs are more stubborn than others, but with some consistency, I’m sure everything will be fine.

smear his nose in it for starters. then try to retrain him. take him out every two hours then gradually build back up to where he doesnt mess in the house

Don’t bother to smear his nose in it…they don’t understand what you’re doing, and all you do is create fear of YOU…Housetraing’s number ONE ingredient is vigilance…You have to watch the dog…period! This is the most intensive training you’ll have to do…keep your boots by the door, and a coat handy, so you can just sweep up the pup, step into your shoes and get him outside. This usually takes about 2 weeks.

You must take him out everytime he eats…everytime he wakes up…and about every 20 minutes while he’s playing.

Try to gate off or restrict his movements to the room you are in…and remember watch him…you’ll soon recognize what he does right before he goes. The goal is to beat him to the punch…by picking him up and taking him outside BEFORE he goes…When he does go outside, PRAISE…PRAISE…PRAISE. If he goes inside, ignore it, and just take him out anyway…it’s too late to get angry, and he won’t know why you are.

When you can’t watch him because you’re gone…or you’re very busy…crate him. Their instincts are such that they don’t want to dirty their nests. Don’t leave him there for hours, however…if you ever push him to the point where he simply can’t hold it, he will go…Once they have overridden that very basic instinct it is nearly impossible to reinstill.

Clean up immediately if you need to steam clean like I did endlessly. I had to keep on top of my dog about a whole year before he finally broke from peeing in the house. Keep it clean so they don’t go again. Hopefully he hasn’t turned peeing in that one spot a habit. It will be too hard to break habits. I caught my dog peeing in my house and I said “NO” and took him outside till he got it. It seemed like eternity. Good luck.

First, make sure that he is not suffering from a urinary tract infection or some other illness by having him checked out by his veterinarian. If all is well, the best thing to do is to buy the “pee-pee” pads that contain pheromones. He will smell these and urinate on the pads, enabling you to clean up much easier and training him to use one spot, not the whole house. Make sure to let him out at regular intervals. It is very important to maintain a schedule. Whatever you do, do NOT rub his nose in it - it is degrading and frightening to him and will only cause setbacks. Remember, dogs are like children and it takes a lot of patience and work to train them. For the posters who said you would “smack” the dog or “rub his nose in it,” you are either uneducated, abusive, or lazy - probably all three.
