What would you think a good dog is for a child with autism?

He is 4 years old so we need something kind of tough. Long story but we really are trying to avoid labs. Environment isn’t a problem we are pretty active and he would have plenty of room. Boxer seems like a great fit but I am worried about the jumping. We would also consider a German shepherd because they have been good dogs for autistic kids as well. We have a trainer all lined up without a dog your thoughts?

Answer #1

Golden retriever. Enough said :)

Answer #2

For sure…

Answer #3

I have a golden and I can vouch for this answer. The gentlest dogs in existence.

Answer #4

I also recommend Newfoundlands. They’re one of the sweetest dog breeds I’ve ever seen, and they aren’t quite as hyper as golden retrievers either. Sorry golden retriever people not trying to bash lol.

Answer #5

I would say a Collie. Their tendency to protect the flock carries over into their human counterparts and Collies have been known to keep children out of danger, which might be an asset for an autistic child. I have a Collie-mix, and she even gets involved in breaking up fights that the cats get into.

Answer #6

I was going to suggest the same breed! My only gripe was the jowl drool. :( They are amiazing dogs just the same!

Answer #7

I agree. I watched a programme a week ago where a collie helped an autistic child to speak so to say.

Answer #8

They do drool a little XD Not nearly as much a saint bernards though
