How to stop a puppy from biting?

My Grandma Has A Basenji Puppy, And The Puppy Bites Me Everytime I Go Near It. The Puppy Has Broke My Skin And Now I Wont Go Anywhere Near It. Is There A Way To Keep The Puppy From Biting?

Answer #1

WELL 4 A PUPPY AND BITTING WHILE THE DOG IS A PUPPY. IS BAD… ONCE THEY HAVE BEEN MEAN AND BITTING FOR MOST OF THERE LIFE THEN CHANCES ARE WHEN you COME NEAR IT, IT WILL BITE U… BUT ITS MOST LIKELY because IT DOES NOT IKE U… SPEND SOME MORE TIME WITH IT LET IT GET USE TO U… BUT IF I KEEPS BITTING you THEN you MIGHT HAVE TO TURN TO PUNISHMENTS… WATER BOTTELS, WHEN IT BITES U, SPRAY IT, THATS HOW I BROKE MY DOG, CAT, AND BIRD FROM BITTING PEOPLE ALTHOUGH IM AM NOT AN EXPERT, I CAN TELL you DONT LET IT SEE THAT you R SCARED OF HIM because DOGS CAN SEE THAT you R SCARED OF THEM AND THATS WHEN THAT WILL GET THE FEELING THAT THEY CAN WALK ALL OVER U… SO TRY BEING NICE TO HIM AND SPEND TIME WITH HIM, AND THEN IF THAT DOESN’T WORK USE A SPRAY BOTTLE WITH JUST PLAIN OLD WATER… THAT SHOULD BREAK THEM OF THE HABIT OF BITTING… LOL…

Does anybody every go back even one day and see if their question might have been answered in the last 24 hours???

Bubbicious97 said the shorter version of the answer, than I …but then I’m just going to copy and paste what I wrote 23 short hours ago…

Puppies play with YOU, just like you were another puppy. Herding pups (Collies, shelties, German Shepherds, Aussies, Heelers) are the worst for ‘mouthing’, especially going for your heels…but all breeds of pups do it to a greater or lessor extent.

If the advice magichaol1 doesn’t work for your pup…try this…

My dog MoJo is a German Shepherd…and was the worst biter/mouther of any GSD’s I’ve ever had…he’d get so excited if I pushed him away, he’d come back like an attack dog…this was at only 9 weeks old. The best ‘discipline’ he ever learned, was if he played rough, I wouldn’t play at all…I’d get up, and go to the bathroom and close the door…he hated that!! I’d stay in there maybe two minutes…if I came out he started in again, I’d go back into the bathroom and shut the door…They HATE being ignored…in 3 days or so, MoJo had ‘learned’ that rough play equaled NO play…and he cooled his jets.

Not every trick of the trade fits every dog…so it’s nice to have an arsenal of alternatives for training… I’ve always liked taking my youngsters to a puppy class…a professional can do wonders for you, in terms of assessing what it is your puppy is needing…and it’s a great place for them to socialize with other dogs and other people…

He is just being a playful pup, but OH those needle teeth…YIKES!

Answer #5

well if the pup is a new born you might be in troble. if it is you best stop it now if this has been going on for longer then two months your grandmothers pup wont stop. almost exactly like yours, I had a sichuation my grandmother had a winner dog and it kept on bitting so we took it to the vet and he said that if its been going on for more then two months it wont stop. so unfotunatly we had two put him down. but if you dont want to resort to that you can get him some chewy toys. however if you want to do it and your willing you can him/her a mussle. I hope I helped
