I need help I am a 17 year old that is really considering the army. I have a really good job though I work at a local nursing home. But, there has been a recruiter that has been constantly asking me about joining the army. I was going to start in the Nursing field. I need someone to feel me in about the army... The benefits, etc PLEASE
Back when I was about 22, I considered for a while joining the air force since they had a program that let you join up, and then continue studying (I was interested in Law at the time, eg, getting a jd degree). The problem was that they wouldn't guarantee I could do that particular program, and I'd have to hope I got what I wanted after joining up.
So, that wasn't such a good deal, to me - the upside was, they would have paid off all my financial aid loans (I still have more of those to deal with) and this would have been a huge help financially. However, you have to ask yourself - are you comfortable with that choice?
I'm not going to say that joining up is right - or wrong - it's up to the individual, however, there are lots of ways to get into a nursing program, and the military is only one option. If you do something like nursing, then you can also look into one of those programs that a company / or the government will pay you for school, then you get some amount of your financial aid paid off by working in a rural or disadvantaged community for a certain number of years.
Hope this helps, I'd give a lot of thought to any decision (even college) that involves taking such a huge chunk out of your life 4+ years is standard for the army.
Good luck.
