Dog marks his territory

This dog that I just took home yesterday (may not keep) marks his territory everywhere, even in the house. He doesn’t need to pee, he just marks everywhere (pees little here and there).

Do you know his reasons and how I can train him how to NOT do this? He is 3 years old and was obviously not trained by his previous owners.

I appreciate anyone’s advice and time!

ok I have a male dog he’s about a year and one half I’m not sure because I’ve had him since he was 6 wks. and they don’t mark until 1 yr. I know that there are sprays you can buy that aren’t very expensive you can get ones to spray where you want the dog to pee or ones to spray where you don’t want him to pee. or every time he starts to pee quickly take him outside and when he pees outside praise him eighther with a treat or just your voice and affection but make him realise it’s wrong inside and right outside. I would also advise you not to hit him nomatter how bad you want to, it will make him agressive and afraid of you and your hand when you try to reach for him to pet him or put him in a crate he will bite you because he thinks you’re going to hit him. hope it helps let me know. :) :)

Marking is an instinctual thing…Neutering helps curb it, and I’ve seen perfectly housetrained dogs do it after anethesia. One thing is, he’s new to your house, so don’t give up on him so easily…give him a week to settle, and see if the urge to mark passes. Some dogs seem to have trouble learing that marking is inappropriate (my sister’s rescued toy poodle comes to mind)…we trained him with a squirt bottle…

You can get stuff from the pet shop that will make him pee in the one place and you should be able to get a spray, if you spray it round the house he wont want to pee where he can smell the stuff… and dont give him up every one has their flaws even dogs :D xx

Answer #6

he might be doing it in the house because he hasnt yet learnt that the place to do his business is outside, not inside. encourage him to go outside, take him out often in the yard, put newspaper down, etc.

Answer #7

Is he neutered? If not, have him neutered, that will usually help.

If your house had previous owners and if the previous owners had pets, then your dogs are probably smelling them and are marking their territory, a natural behaviour. Use an enzymatic cleaner to neutralize the pet smells – only enzymatic cleaners will do this, as far as I know. Then, if they are still marking, restrict the areas they are allowed into. They may be overwhelmed with trying to “establish their presence” with such a large new area. Start with a small area like the kitchen or someplace that’s near the family action. Gradually expand their access when you are happy about their behaviour.

If you can catch them in the act and say a firm “no” and then put them outside to ignore them for a while.

Answer #8

get him neutered. that will make him stop feeling the need to mark his territory. housetrain him well.

Answer #9

its because he is new is why hes marking his territory…just correct him when he does this and after a few days it should quit…its a typical male dog thing
