do I disect the frogs?

my science teacher is requiring all his students to disect frogs. this is completely goes against mine and my friends ethics. I’m a vegetarian and I don’t believe in killing animals for food, muchless disection. that and the frogs we are getting didn’t die of natural causes. they were sufficated! is that messed up or what?!! my friends and I have tried a petition, but my teacher just won’t be convinced. my parents are hopeless and I just don’t know what to do. if it wasn’t worth half of my grade then I wouldn’t be asking. (grades are extremely important to my family. like more than 2 b’s and I’m grounded) all the other science teachers in my grade are giving it as an option. my science teacher won’t let us use the computer to do a virtual disection either. what do I do? would it be wrong to disect the frogs? I’m not sure I would be able to live with myself if I did.

Answer #1

It’s a matter of ethics, yes, but please realize that whether you like it or not, you’re a member of the dominant species of this planet, highest on the food chain. These frogs are going to serve as a powerful educational tool. Dissection provides valuable insight into anatomy, and SHOULD be required by all schools.

Answer #2

The frogs are going to be killed regardless of whether you decide to dissect or not. At least make their deaths useful and do the dissection - dissections are fantastic to learn about the relationship between structures, so make the most of it.

Answer #3

Think of it this way: The frogs are already dead, but they don’t have to had died in vain. Learn from them, and then at least they had a purpose.

Answer #4

In general biology classes will accommodate students who can not perform dissection due to moral objections. When I went to high school we could opt out of doing dissections but we were still responsible for knowing all of the information.

Some schools these days are using virtual dissection for their biology classes where students learn anatomy with a computer program instead of with a scalpel.

Answer #5

Oh please, just do it. don’t think about it and get your grade. I am sure you can look on to someone else in the classroom. It’s a frog not a person.

Answer #6

Well the frogs are already dead now, therefore, if you don’t disect them the killing of them would have been in vain. Either way the frog is dead, it’s better to expand your knowledge and benefit from it.

Answer #7

I’d go talk to your principal… You shouldnt have to do anything that goes against something you are morally against…

Answer #8

WElll when my schoool had to disec frogs there were some students against it and they had an alternate assignment to do much more boring but if your really opposed to it then ask your teacher for that im pretty sure that they have to have somethinggg for the people that don’t want to.

Answer #9

You did not kill the frogs so it was not your fault, I think that if you don’t they the frog will have died in vain. At least it is put to good purpose…
