what is the difference between an RN & LPN?

im a medical assistant and am looking to eventually go back to school but i want to know what the difference is first before i choose a school.if anyone has any information that would be great.

LPN is Licensed Practical Nurse. People can become LPN with as little as 1 year of on-the-job training but there are also schools that offer LPN programs.

RN is Registered Nurse and it requires a degree; either Associates (2 year) or Bachelors (4 year) followed by a national exam. Some hospitals are pushing for all Bachelor or Science RNs.

LPNs only do basic care while RNs are given more complex duties and draw higher salaries.
