Is it possible to die of extreme depression/sadness?

If so what would cause the body to die

Answer #1

I doubt it is possible to actually die from the depression itself, but the “ending it” is the big factor in death. Doing yourself in is the biggest factor in death “from depression” I don’t think that you can really die from depression alone.

Answer #2

yeah acually the person above is right, but i think depression can cause you enough stress to cause other heath problems that lead to death…like malnutrition where you get too depressed to eat…ect. idk if it’s true also iv’e heard you can get strokes? haha idk but google has answers to everything lol

Answer #3

yes you can

Answer #4

how?

Answer #5

There are many reasons.. people get sick because of depression. that is why they have to take care of it or go to a specialist.. Depends what kind.. Like if someone passes away and a person cannot stop crying it can have a major effect on the persons body and get them ill. Others can cause someone to harm themselves. Others can get heart attacks. I started losing my hair and got anemic.. i had to take pills to help me out..

Answer #6

From the stress or sadness itself, I don’t think it is likely to happen since stress and sadness is mental illness. But if it is from the effect of the stress and sadness, then that’s possible. But I believe you ask from the stress alone, right?

Answer #7

*for

Answer #8

yeah i was wondering if the actual emotions and mental problems could cause death

Answer #9

Stress is not just a mental thing. Stress is a physiological response involving the production of various hormones and peptides, and yes, stress can cause physical illness and potentially death.

Answer #10

Stress can, yes. For one thing, over production of stress hormones such as adrenaline can lead to the death of cardiac tissue, leading to a multitude of problems which could end up being fatal.

Answer #11

Some people who have really bad depression will refuse to eat and drink. But then the lack of water will kill them. Some people who have other diseases will experience these to get worse. So if you have e weak heart, you could maybe get a heart attack caused by emotional distress.

And sadly, many people with really severe depressions do harm to themselves.

Answer #12

I have never found any source on the case though. Stress and sadness is not categorized into deadly deseases like heart attack or cancer. Sadness and Stress alone is not likely to cause someone die. Instead, they will go insane. However, as I said previously, if the sadness and the stress finally affect the physical condition, like when someone can not eat anything, then yes the person will die. But the diagnose will tell that this person die due to starvation not due to stress. So yes stress may cause death, only indirectly.

Answer #13

Anything is possible these days

Answer #14

No, not just indirectly. Stress hormones can DIRECTLY cause tissue damage. I dont think sadness can directly cause death, but stress can.

Answer #15

yeah that’s what i was trying to say lol thanks danielle

Answer #16

I had a pet monkey that lived in my apartment with me and my girlfriend. He really took to my girlfriend probably because she played with him all the time and even spoke to him while we ate dinner. My obligations to him were limited to morning walks. When my girlfriend left me for speaking badly about the stench from the Chimpanze, the monkey refused to eat, play or even sleep after she left. I begged her to come back if only for the love of the animal, but she woul dhave none of it. After about two weeks, I found the monkey emaciated in the corner of his bedroom too weak to walk or stand. I rushed him to the vet where he sadly passed. The vet said he died of starvation and tried to have me arrested. As you might have guessed, I punched the vet in the face at such a suggestion and to this day am convinced the monkey died of a broken heart from depression and sadness.

Answer #18

In the elderly who aren’t all that physically well, I believe the stress can cause death. In otherwise healthy adults it is unlikely to cause death.
