Did you know that “vampires” exists?

Ok, this is the second time when I post this, but I’m kind of tired of Twilight fans, even vampires fans, whom actually have no idea that the “vampirism” is actually a disease known as “photosensitive porphyria”. This disease was widely spread some time ago. King George III had it, some of his descendants too. A new theory says that even Countess Erzebeth Bathory suffered from porphyria. This is the disease from which vampire stories started. (1) Porphyria victims are extraordinarily sensitive to sunlight. Even mild exposure can cause severe disfigurement. Facial skin may scar, the nose and fingers may fall off, and the lips and gums may become so taut that the teeth project like fangs. To avoid sunlight, people with serious cases of porphyria go out only at night. Today porphyria can be treated with injections of blood products. Centuries ago, porphyria victims might have sought to treat themselves by drinking blood. Garlic contains a chemical that worsens porphyria symptoms, causing sufferers to avoid it.

also, there are vampire bats. :) they go out at night and suck blood from victims(cows, horses, and the like) and they have fangs, too. :B (they are real animals, just to let you know) :D pretty cool, huh?

Answer #2

well if you combine the victims of this disease with the crazy cult of people who actually practice vampirism as a religion, then perhaps you have something close to an actual vampire.

of course they will be sans any real magical powers.

Answer #3

I heard that scientists proved the vampiers doexist. Yeah I know the thing about Twilight. I read Twilight but I read it as a romance novel, not as a book about vampires.

Answer #4

That doesn’t mean that vampires exist. That means a viable origin for the ‘vampire legend’ exists. Porphyria doesn’t explain crucifixes, wooden stakes, holy water, shapeshifting, superhuman strength, etc. Porphyria doesn’t cause people to grow fangs and attack people in the neck either.

Of course, people define ‘vampire’ in different ways. For example, if you define it as a creature that sustains itself by biting and drawing blood from another living creature; then vampires exist, because fleas, ticks, mosquitos, leeches, and vampire bats exist.

Answer #5

…already been mentioned…

Answer #8

Ah…but this wasn’t the origins of the fictional vampires…”The notion of vampirism has existed for millennia; cultures such as the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Ancient Greeks, and Romans had tales of demons and spirits which are considered precursors to modern vampires.”
