What is a codec?(more)

I got a new camera, and none of the video files are going onto Windows Movie Maker. This is the message it says: The file cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. How can I fix this?

Codec is short for code-decode, or compressing-decompressing, or whatever other variation you might prefer. It is just a computer program designed to encode and decode digital data and signals. Basically, videos and such can be large files that can cause many inconveniences, the codec compresses it to make it more convenient and in turn you will need the codec to decode it, or rather, decompress the file to play it. To fix this you simply need to download and install it. When you get the message does it direct you to a link? or provide you with the name of the codec you need? If so just do a quick internet search and you should find it off of a microsoft website.
