What's worse: Cigars or Cigarettes?

I know they are both bad for you, so please don’t say they are both bad.

I am just wondering if cigars are any worse than just regular cigarettes, or if it’s the same. My mother just switched to smoking these cigars that taste just like a regular cigarettes, because they are much cheaper. I would just like to know if it’s going to be any worse than smoking normal cigarettes.

Thanks in advance!

well, it really depends on the manufacturer, the tobacco grade, chemicals used etc.

but they are mostly the same although if its hand rolled cigars then id say go with those since they dont go under a chemical bath and are traditionally made….

Answer #2

I’m not sure about any of that. I just read one of the packs, and it said “not a safe alternative to cigarettes.” What exactly does that mean? Does that mean you should not smoke them regularly like cigarettes? If so, why?

Answer #3

Sorry to do a copy and paste, but I guess this gives a better answer than I could:

The health risks involved with both cigar and cigarette smoking are closely related to the frequency of smoking, as testifies by researches carried out by National Cancer Institute. Smoking cigars or cigarettes is immaterial, as compared to how regularly and how much one smokes. Individuals smoking cigarettes daily stand a greater risk of developing cancer compared to occasional cigar smokers. That does not, however, suggest that cigar is less injurious. In fact, cigars contain more carcinogens than cigarettes because of its larger mass. Also, the secondhand smoke emitted by cigar is more toxic as compared to cigarettes. This once again is because the greater smoke produced by the greater mass of the cigar.

yes you should not smoke them like cigarettes, because one cigar may contain 3 maybe 4 times the amount of nicotine in ONE packet

were talking about over 40mg of nicotine in one cigar…. so tell her to take it slow, one cigar should last 2-3 days or more but if she smokes one a day well she has a serious problem :O

Hmm… the thing I am having trouble with, is that these “cigars” my mom bought are different from actual cigars. They are the same size as a cigarette, and they have a filter that looks just like a cigarette’s filter. They even come in a cigarette looking pack. The only thing that looks different, is the color of the paper it’s rolled in. It’s brown, not white. The tobacco even tastes like a cigarette, not a cigar. I read the links you gave me, but it seems like those articles are referring to the big, flavored cigars that you don’t inhale. Which is not what my mom bought.

You see, these aren’t like regular cigars. This is why I am having such a hard time.

Cigar smokers are less likely to get loung cancer, but they can get cancer in the mouth instead. This is because you are not really supposed to inhale cigarsmoke. Just have it in your mouth and taste it. I don’t really think that what you are talking about is cigars. Maaybe cigarillos, or just plain cigarettes with brown paper. (I think there’s some cigarettes called Moore who are like that). A cigar should be much fatter, and they are not rolled in paper, but in one big tobacco leaf, if they are good, and made by hand. The ceaper ones, rolled by machines can be rolled into more than one leaf. I’m a huge cigar fan, and the best ones are hand made in Cuba :) They can be pretty expencive. Last summer I bought a box containing 25 Cohiba Esplendidos for 2000 Canadian dollars O_o

You are not supposed to have one single cigar for 2-3 days. If it goes out, and you put it aside, it will go bad, and the taste is ruined. You can relight one within a couple of hours if you use a cigar cutter, and remove maybe half an inch from the top. If you light a cigar, you are supposed to have the time to sit down and smoke all of it. You don’t smoke a cigar for the same “reason” as someone will smoke a cigarette. It’s more like a good wine. It’s for tasting and enjoying :)

Answer #9

Cigarettes are usually worse, although both are bad for you. There are more chemicals in cigarettes such as the fire safe agents.

Answer #10

@larz was just a comparison really…. and this isnt so much about the ruined taste as it is about nicotine consumption ;)

@anglee27 you are looking for cigarillos ;) same as cigars really except smaller, just tell her to not overdo it cos you cant really know how much nicotine and tar you are really inhaling :S

Answer #11

or by a bag of tabacco and a pipe and enjoy it that way!

Answer #12

I dunno….Probably Cigars because there’s more of it to smoke, if you are comparing a single cigar to a single cigarette. But cigarellos are the best, because of their flavor, and they are the smallest.

Answer #13

BOTH ! :/
