Why does my chihuahua growl so much?

He’s about 5 years old, we have another dog he gets along with and he is usually growling whenever we pick him up or even talk to him (kinda like a grouchy old man ha ha).I think it may be out of excitement (which it sometimes is)and the fact he wasn’t raised normally before we got him.For 6 months he was left in a pet carrier and fed only bread and water. We spoil him rotten now and he knows it (trust me ^_^) but he still growls at innapropriate times. He doesn’t act out anymore than any other dog: the occasional accident, being wary of strangers, staring hoping for scraps, etc. He does it when we rub his tummy or scratch in a good spot almost like he’s talking to us.It’s very confusing.

Answer #1

Because it’s a chihuahua , and they’re yappy and annoying.

Answer #2

ha ha yeah he is and its not like he’s always mad i can’t help but wonder if he knows his constant growling annoys us :p

Answer #3

Yep I have 3 and they r soooo annoying, big dogs don’t seem to bark as much as little dogs

Answer #4

try to take him to a dog behaviorist. they train your dog to act better towards you and other people. and make sure to take the dog there almost every day.. so i really suggest a trainer or behaviorist before it gets worse… good luck!

Answer #5

haha

Answer #6

He’s seeing somebody he does not know, he has pain of some kind, or he’s just doing it because that’s how he is.

Answer #7

probably just how he is cause its even when he is around only the family lol

Answer #8

I’m no expert so i think that you should consider asking a dog trainer/ behaviourist but because of his background, i think it might have alot to do with that. I think that he may possibly be quite possessive over you and when you give your other dog attention he does not like it but then again, i’m not quite sure that he sees you as his pack leader either. If you do pamper him like you say, which alot of people do, this could be reflected in his behaviour. It’s really sad what some animals go through in their past but when you do pamper them it can bring out bad habits too. I’d read some books on dog behaviour or have a look on the internet, hopefully you’ll find out what might help.
