What causes the chemical imbalance in the brain that results in depression?

Answer #1

doctors don’t know for certain. what will happen is they will come up with a lead, chase it down, and then get no conclusive evidence. They do have things that will bring the balances back to normal, but as for what starts the imbalance, no idea. the most promising theory is our own thoughts can create the imbalance itself.

no one really knows /: P:

Well, seretoinen (not really sure if I spelled that right lol) is the chemical that there is not enough of when you have depression, so you MIGHT get depression when you don’t eat enough protien, because that’s where seretoinen is commonly found… There are probably multiple causes, though….

This is widely misunderstood. It is true that people who are depressed have a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is NOT true that the chemical imbalance is what “caused” their depression. On the contrary, the chemical imbalance is usually a result of certain life experiences or behaviors (including mental habits), most likely ones that have been often repeated.

As blakbeltv3 said, “our own thoughts can create the imbalance.”

“Depression, we are saying, is not a disease; it is a natural response to certain types of emotional introspection that result in excessive dreaming.” - Human Givens, 2003, J. Griffin & I. Tyrrell

Although stress could be a fairly “modern” concept in terms of our biology, the body deals with stress by viewing it as a conventional threat, for instance being attacked. Source: http://funadvice.com/r/bmokctmj66e
