Chat privacy

When you chat online with someone is it stored on your hard drive…can it be retrieved by experts, or does it go away completely?

It depends on the site, the application, and your personal settings.

Some chats are stuck in cyberspace almost indefinitely, while others are erased when the chat window closes. If a chat is saved to your hard drive, it’s because you’ve set up your preferences to do that.

UNLESS you are using an online client, like google chat or meebo, it WILL be on your hard drive, unless you screw around with more complicated settings than your application.

If your concern is privacy, use google chat in the “off the record” mode in your browser. Google chat also supports AIM.
