Dale, check into getting SKYPE. I have skype on my computer now, and have an inexpensive headphone and mike combination, and through my computer I can call a telephone in Ireland for 1.7 cents a minute - $1.02 USD per hour. And if I am calling to a computer anywhere in the world that has internet, it’s free. I do have broadband connection, and that may make a difference. You will have to check.

Incidentally, Mass. has 9 area codes and Calif. has 26. You will have to google the city you are trying to call. For regular phone service from Ireland to the US is

    00 + 1 + area code + phone number

depends on your phone carrier sometimes it free sometimes its free after a certain time
