Cat in 30-40 degree weather

My cat is an outdoor cat and has been for about 5 months, it’s getting closer to fall and the weather in central ny drops to about 35-45 degrees at night,

Theres a small table out there that we use to have cupboards, we took them off and he started sleeping in it. I put a blanket inside it and a blanket half over the opening to keep heat in. Will he be okay in this weather? And is the shelter okay?

Lately he’s been reluctant to go outside and he’s been meowing a lot. Im a little concerned, but he seems fine, just fussy.

Believe it or not, they can handle colder temperatures than that.

The outdoor cats here tolerate temperatures that plummet to -45 C (-50F).

However, your cat should stay in at night for safety purposes.

I see coyotees carrying dead and mangled cat bodies in their mouths on a weekly basis. Foxes too… A responsible pet owner does not release their pet into the outdoors where it will be unattended and vulnerable to harm. All it takes if for Fluffy to not look both ways one time and BAM another dead cat. Or your neighbor gets sick of your cat crapping in his child’s sand box (I’m SO sick of this myself…) that he sets up snare traps and antifreeze for kitty to explore. Our local humane society is looking for a man who is poisoning cats at night… so keep that in mind. Plus they could get into scraps with diseased cats, catch the illness themself, and pass it on to you, or another cat. Keep him inside.

He comes inside through out the day but at night he misbehaves so he has to stay out side. I live in the village so theres no harmful animals that will hurt him. He dtays out of the road and he a;so has a reflective collar, but thanks for the advice, :)

Answer #4

He will be fine at those temperatures…Make sure he has a place to go where it’s dry…a bed, even. Cats are very hardy, and outside cats grow a coat to accomodate the temperature change.
