Why did my cat have her full mouth on the kitten's throat?

Answer #1

Its natural. Its how they drag them around. If people did that, then there would be a lot less accidents from children running into the street. Im gonna go do it to my baby brother real quick- hold on…

Answer #2

It’s not natural for them to carry by the front of the neck. The back of the neck is where the scruff is. If the kittens are still semi new though, they may not always be in the perfect position for the mother to simply pick them up and move them correctly, so she may end up doing it sort of awkwardly. Every time any of my cats has had kittens and done that, we generally just take the kitten from them, and lay it on it’s stomach before the mama cat so she can pick it up easier. Sometimes we just let the mother transport one kitten, and then help her buy moving the rest to that spot just in case. Newborn kittens can be quite fragile, but we’ve only ever had one cat that harmed a kitten accidentally through carrying technique, and I’m had a lot of cats in my day. They may look pretty harsh, but really their mouths are very gentle.

Answer #3

It’s just how they carry their young. Domestic house cats, as well as big jungle cats carry their babies by the loose skin on their necks. It doesn’t hurt them.

Answer #9

Sometimes cats also play with each other by “play biting”. I think it was more likely that this cat was trying to either move or discipline the kitten, but sometimes cats, like puppies, play a little bit rough with each other. :) If the kitten doesn’t screech in pain, she’s not actually being hurt by the biting. I have dogs and cats, and they get along great. The cats think they are dogs, and will often play with the dogs. They sometimes nip each other, or just “mouth” each other. They’re very gentle. It’s just harmless play (and VERY cute to see dogs and cats playing and cuddling together).
