What does it mean when the carton says fertilized eggs?

We bought a dozen from whole foods and I went for the cheaper ones…while my wife was cooking, I read the carton this morning and got curious :)

Answer #1

well when an egg is fertilized im pretty sure it means there was a rooster around and yeah, so those eggs could’ve turned into chicks if you had given them the proper enviroment or you might find a half dead baby chicken in one or twwo. That’s pretty gross, so i hope that’s not the case =P

Answer #2

These are probably free range eggs - where thereare cockerels on site.
Many fertilized eggs are sold without being marked as such.

Search for “fertilized” in this link:

from a University of Florida fact sheet.

Answer #3

im not sure so dont quote me haha

i think its a very young egg or the chicken that layed it was very young..

i dont know….

hold on i know a farmer ill text him lol

Answer #4

Not really likely to be any chick foetuses in them.

Eggs are collected very fresh and will have lacked the incubation warmth necessary for the fertilized cells to start dividing. It is however a remote possibility.

Answer #5

yeahh, i know, but i’ve heard of a friend actually finding one, so i just mentioned it

Answer #6

most eggs are unferitlized for human consumption, but some of them are fetilized and marked accordingly.

there is no nutritional difference between the two, the fertiliztion process is stopped once refridgeration is used to preserve the eggs.

some of the fetuses are allowed to develope for ‘balut’ in the asian communities. but most fertilized eggs are sorted with high intensity light to see if a fetus is inside the egg- however it is a mechanical device and can sometimes not do a perfect job of seperation- thus finding a fetus in an egg every now and then in the carton.

Answer #7

Thanks, good answer…now I’m thinking I’ll never buy that type again :)

Answer #8

pretty much what my mate farmer piles said after he tried to joke by telling me that all eggs are fertilised cus otherwise there wouldnt be chicken eggs

Answer #9

Yeah, I have seen one as well but only one out of several thousand that I must have used - I guess around 8,000 …..

….. and I suspect that the box did not indicate that it contained fertilized eggs anyway.

There is no particular reason to object to fertilized eggs in my opinion. Unfertilized eggs contain female gametes, fertilized eggs also contain male gametes.

OK ! so what of it?

It is not like there is a living organism in there - the eggs are collected and refrigerated too soon to have allowed any significant degree of fertilized cell division to have occurred, and any that had occurred would have been stopped dead once incubation ceased.

Answer #10

It means it won’t be to long untill there will be a baby!
