How do I calm my hyper dog down, and stop the playful biting?

My dog gets really wild sometimes. She starts running around, jumping, biting, etc… She does this when I’m sitting on the computer, and I try to ignore it so she will stop…but she keeps jumping and biting my arms and hands while I type. It doesn’t hurt that bad because she is so small, but it’s a bit annoying.

I like that she is playful and all, and I don’t want her to just lay around and be boring…but when she starts acting like this, and it’s not the right time to be wild…how to I calm her down?

Also, when she is hyper, she will bite my blankets, pillows, etc…and rip holes in them. What can I do? I tapped her, and said “No!” in a harsh, but calm voice, then she ran off the bed. Was that the correct way? She doesn’t always chew and bite things…just when she is hyper.

When she is hyper, I try to calm her down by sitting her in my lap or holding her by my side firmly…but she is so hyper, jumpy, and squirming that I can barely hold her!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Play with your dog, and remember to reinforce positive behaviors. They obviously need to work out some excess energy so take long walks with them, or have them catch a ball or stick you toss. Calm them down after play, by giving them a treat, hugging them, or petting them. Let them know by your actions, that its time to calm down and relax. Bring your dog to a halt, yelling no in a string firm voice or tugging on her collar. When you talk to her talk in a softer tone but if your telling her no make sure it’s a firm voice so she will understand she’s doing bad. Praise her when she’s doing good and give her a treat.

You need to get her more exercise. Basic rule of dogs is a well exercised dog is a well behaved dog, a bored dog is trouble. She needs at least a couple of walks daily.

The word “wrong” works much better than “No”. It has more of a growl sound to it and is easier for a female to say firmly. When your dog bites at you, immediately say Wrong/no and turn away and refuse to play any further. When they calm down you can resume play.

You need to get control over her. You do this by being a solid stable pack leader. Make her “Sit” for everything - before food, before she goes out, before you give her anything. Do no let her up on the furniture until you say so. When walking her make sure she stays beside or slightly behind you, never infront. Do obedience work with her several times a day.

You should try watching the “Dog Whisperer”, Caesar Milan is amazing with jobs and gives great advice on dealing with many dog issues.

Answer #3

A “hyper” dog needs more phsycal and mental exercise than it’s getting. BEFORE you sit down at the computer….take her for a walk…..work on her obedience, work on a trick….do something that tires her out. Mental stimulation takes more out of a dog than phsycal exercise….however, you have to do the physical first so they’ll hear you.

Do dog first……computer second….
